Here is an extract from my file 15:
ROB ROY MACGREGOR - SIR WALTER SCOTT'S MISTAKE ABOUT HIS WIFE MARY:
All MACGREGORS can thank Sir Walter for his romantic version of the life of the heroic ROB ROY. Many have wondered how an apparent outright error crept into his story, in that Scott referred to her throughout as Helen. Dr John Ward shows her as MARY MACGREGOR, the daughter of GREGOR MACGREGOR OF COMAR, and the marriage at Buchanan on 1 Jan 1693. He gives Rob's date of baptism as 7 March 1671.
In his magnificent 1995 novel 'ROB ROY MACGREGOR' Nigel Tranter calls Mary of Comar 'a far-out cousin' of Rob's, and agrees that Mary's father was MACGREGOR OF COMAR, a second cousin of Glengyle's. He shows the marriage was at Corryarklet at New Year 1693. Tranter says:
"Scott's picture of Rob's wife is far from flattering - and he doesn't even get her name right. He calls her Helen, whereas her true name was Mary. How he came to make this mistake about the name is not to be known - but the register of Buchanan parish, where the marriage banns were proclaimed, gives the true name of Mary, spelt in the form of Marie as often done in Scotland."
In researching the AUSTIN family of KILSPINDIE, which is in the Carse of Gowrie about ten miles east of Perth, I have found an entry in Samuel Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Scotland, under the heading of KILSPINDIE, which refers to the ruins of Evelick Castle, "the seat of the LINDSAYS and birthplace of HELEN LINDSAY, wife of JOHN CAMPBELL Esq of Glenlyon, whose daughter HELEN, according to the session records, was married on 22 Sept 1663 to the far-famed ROB ROY." This is patently in error. The lovable rogue ROB ROY seems to have been born long after that date, and his marriage was nearly 30 years later. This Helen Campbell must have married an entirely different Robert MacGregor (or Campbell, his alias). Quite possibly this confusion occurred in other publications and led to the mistake by Sir Walter. Kilspindie is quite near MEGGINCH, the seat of the DRUMMONDS OF MEGGINCH and BARONESS STRANGE, relatives of DR ADAM AUSTIN of Edinburgh, mentioned in my earlier writings.
